So today my mom went to the bank, transferred an unholy amount of cash into an account and had them write a letter certifying that amount so that NYFA will know that we can afford to send me there. Hopefully this will be enough to satisfy NYFA so that we can finalize my attendance and move onto getting an apartment.
I called the NYFA Housing Co-ordinator today to talk about some options. He told me that they have all sorts of connections with different short-term housing people, as well as an index of different students (both former, and current), and faculty that rent rooms or full apartments. I’m thinking right now that I will likely rent a room so that I don’t have to pay $2,000 a month, or live in New Jersey in order to afford my own place. So far from looking at Craig’s List I’m going to have a hard time finding a place to stay in Manhattan that is under $1,000, and that is if I am renting a room. If I want my own place I will probably end up spending $1,400 and up for a studio (depending how close to NYFA I want to be).
The guy told me that I should probably wait until mid-June if I want to find a place to stay for September as there probably isn’t much of anything available now for that start date. I did find a place for rent with 2 other guys on Craig’s List but they would have needed me to sign a lease within a week or two, and without a chance to meet them, or some way to check out if I’m being scammed or not, I wouldn’t want to jump into anything, even though they do seem like people I would want to live with (they are both into acting, and filmmaking which would be cool).
Now that I’m in the hunt for an apartment I’ll keep you posted on my progress, and if you know somewhere I should check out, let me know in the comments.
