I came across an interesting article on a website called A Dog’s Breakfast where the author talks about the limited marketing savvy of first time filmmakers.  He speculates that very few first time filmmakers really put much thought into who is the market when they begin writing their script, and just wait until after it is done to figure out who might watch it.  Sounds like a disastrous strategy to me.  The whole idea of making a movie is to show it to other people.  It is all about exhibitionism.  You can’t be so narcissistic that you only care if you like what you have made.  I won’t go into too much detail about what the article says, I’ll leave it to you to read it yourself.

Totally accurate. It also works the other way. A couple of writers I know came up with a great concpet and a fantastic marketing angle, went up to Sundance for the film festival on their own dime, and implemented it. Problem was it worked SO well that they had every producer, agent, and manager in town calling them and they’d forgotten to actually write the script first. Probably should have waited a year. Live and learn.
