YouTube is having an absolutely awesome contest for anyone who is interested in becoming a film director. Along with HP and Fox Searchlight Pictures YouTube is calling for submissions for short films with 3 specific requirements:

1) Your film must feature a character dealing with a situation above their maturity level.

2) The line of dialogue “I demand an explanation for these shenanigans! What do you have to say?”

3) Someone must pass someone else a photograph (I’m guessing this ties in with HP as a sponsor somehow?)

“Thank You For Smoking” director Jason Reitman is sort of the spokesman for the contest as it kind of ties in with the theme of his new film “Juno” which features a young girl who gets pregnant.

So what happens if you win? You get some cash ($5000!), and you get to go to a “major international film festival” in Park City, the same time as Sundance. Hmmm, sounds like Sundance if you ask me, not sure why they phrased it like that. Also, while you’re down there you’ll get to meet with some executives from Fox Searchlight Pictures, which could be worth far more than the $5000 if you’re lucky.

We plan to do a short for this contest, so hopefully if we don’t screw it up you’ll see our first short on here soon. The entry deadline is November 9, so you better get going if you want to enter. The information video with Jason Reitman is below:
