On Wednesday Conrad, Brett and myself (refer to about film school student for more information about the team) are heading out to Vancouver for the weekend. The purpose of our trip is twofold: 1) Get away from Edmonton (2) Scope out Vancouver to see how feasible is it for us to move out there. After speaking to a lot of different people involved in film the biggest thing I have learned is that it is important to surround yourself with like minded people, and to be located in a place where the resources are available for you to make your films. Edmonton is not that place, while Vancouver is. Vancouver is not L.A. or NYC, but it is definitely a step up from Edmonton, a big step up.
I think for anyone who aspires to make it in the film industry there comes a time where you have to take a chance. Oftentimes that could mean uprooting yourself from your comfortable surroundings, and moving somewhere where your chances of success are greatly improved. However, I do think that it is important to make sure you do it right. I learned that from my experience of going to film school in New York City last year. I didn’t get everything organized as I should have. I had too much going on back home and as a result I wasn’t in a position to commit myself fully to the program. Plus the fact that the program was not as good as I had hoped, did not help much either. This time around we’re planning to do things as a team, so we can support each other, and also we are planning well in advance to make sure we have our ducks in a row.
It should be an interesting experience, and hopefully we discover it is feasible for us to get out to Vancouver next winter. I should also mention that I am trying to organize an interview with a well known director based in Vancouver to post on the site, stay tuned for more information on that.

That’s awesome, good luck to you guys. I live in a small town in Ohio, and it just doesn’t seem like you can really do anything in film where I live. I’d really like to get out to NYC or L.A. someday.
