I haven’t seen the movie yet so I can’t give you my opinion yet, but from the conversations I have had with Josh and Jeremiah I can tell they know their stuff, and one of the biggest things I have noticed from my conversations with them is that they get the fact that you aren’t just born good at this stuff, you need to put in lots of time. They told me how they have shot so many bad shorts, and written so many bad scripts before they started to get better.
I think that attitude is going to take these guys places, because if you have the full understanding that you need to grind it out to make it in this business, I’m convinced you can make it. I’m actually really excited to see where their careers head, I think they could end up making some waves in Hollywood someday, and if you buy their first DVD then you’ll have helped them do it! So buy their DVD now : )

I’m very curious to see what they are intending to do now with these cameras, and specifically where the price points are going to be. I doubt I’ll be in the market for the Epic, but if the Scarlet is anywhere near where they originally said it would be in terms of what it can do and what it will cost, then I may want one : ) Does anyone have any thoughts as to what they might be doing?

I stumbled across some comments from someone suggesting that the Toronto International Film Festival wasn’t international enough. They criticize the festival for placing the majority of their emphasis on the Canadian, American and British films. Honestly, I don’t think it matters where the films are from, as long as the best ones are getting the most attention as opposed to the ones that just have the biggest marketing budgets.

It’s an interesting topic though, film festivals were originally meant to be a way for smaller independent productions to get noticed. Now they’re hot spots on the calendars of celebrities and socialites. Either they’ve sold out, or they’ve just become so successful at doing what they were meant to do, I’ll go with the former. Right now I’m watching a Canadian celebrity show “E-Talk”, they are covering the festival and the emphasis is definitely on the fashion and Brad and Jen being in the same city, and Ryan Gosling being back with Rachel McAdams.

What do you think? Are film festivals too pimped out now? What’s the best way for independents to get noticed now if film festivals are just for the mini-majors?

Recently I went with my friend Mercedes to visit the set of a music video for German Techno group “Boys Noize”. I read online that this band is being touted as the next Daft Punk by some, of course hated by others, which is of course the way things go, but I digress. The video was directed by Michael Maxxis, an Edmonton native who has since moved to New Orleans and is quickly making a name for himself as a music video director. He directed P.O.D.’s latest video as well as videos for Ours.

The video was being shot on and around 97th street in Edmonton, and for those of you who don’t know Edmonton this is basically the worst part of town. This is where all of the homeless, the prostitutes, and the pimps congregate. The last shot of the day was in front of an adult video store with 25cent peep shows. Mercedes briefly explained the concept of the video to me, and I will refrain from ruining it by telling you, but I will say that it is pretty subversive.

Mercedes took a bunch of pictures at the shoot, I can’t even really explain what was going on, I have no idea to be honest, it was all pretty weird. I think the woman in the shoot may have been an actual prostitute, but I’m not sure to be honest.

The guys who brought us the Red One camera have made a major announcement, and while I am terribly late in reporting on it I figured I would make some mention about it anyway. The cameras are available for the high end with the new Red 5K Epic, and for entry level with the Red 3K Scarlet. After visiting HD For Indies I discovered that the Epic is expected to be priced around $40k while the Scarlet is expected to cost $3K. I’m assuming they are targetting the big hitters like Peter Jackson and company with the Epic, the Red One will be for the indies, and the Scarlet will be for students and hobbyists. Also announced was the Red Ray, which from my understanding is a player capable of playing back 4K footage from Red’s compact flash cards, but I am not exactly sure what this is all about to be honest.

Well we have finished our Project Direct short, and we cut it extremely close on time. Not only have we uploaded it one day before the deadline, but we came in at 6 minutes 58 seconds, 2 seconds shy of the 7 minute maximum. This is the first short that we have done as a group, and the first short I have done that had sound, and colour. While I’ll be the first to admit there are some shortcomings, I’m proud of what we accomplished. I’ll go into more depth on the short later on, including a break down of what we learned, but for now just sit back and enjoy!
